This is the motto of the former American Women's Self Defense Association. Thanks to the generosity of Phil Messina, Modern Warrior's® president, Modern Warrior® was the home of AWSDA's headquarters for many years, from its inception in 1990.
There are many philosophical statements like this throughout the building at Modern Warrior. This particular sign is hanging in the south gym to remind students, especially Rape Prevention and Female Self Defense students that they DO NOT HAVE TO BE VICTIMIZED.
Sometimes, people get caught up in what we call "Dependency Based Self Defense."
Examples:
1) I don't need self defense, I carry a gun. (But what if you don't have time to get to your weapon or you run out of ammo or your gun malfunctions and you need to make time to clear it! What if there is more than one assailant or the assailant gets shot and then takes your weapon?)
2) My (husband, boyfriend, dad) will protect me. (Are you joined at the hip? Does he work? Where are you then? What if he becomes injured or killed, who protects you then? Your survival begins and ends with YOU!)
3) I carry mace (a knife, etc.) They all have their place, but they are merely tools, YOU are the weapon.
Depending on anyone or anything else is a huge risk. Ultimately, wouldn't YOU rather make the choices that could affect your destiny?
